We 'brown bagged it,' and ate lunch on Little Round Top, fantastic view, best on the Field. We then drove, and walked Devils Den, and some other monuments.
If you’re attending for the first time or 10th, I encourage you to book a private tour. Absolutely the best experience you’ll have.
Next, go to the store, and buy either one of the talking tours. We got the one with Stephen Lang narrating it. We also bought a book on every monument at Gettysburg, highly suggested. After that, my wife and I just drove the battlefield, with the map, and just drove the route, so we would have an idea of the drive, for the next day.
This place is awesome. Over one million artifacts and you learn SO much. We spent 5 hours here and only got to see 1/3 of the museum because we read everything and fully soaked in the exhibits and information. Need to come back another 2 days to see the other 2 thirds. The cyclorama was amazing and film was cool! Definite must see when in Gettysburg. We heard they change the entire museum every 5 years (due in 2018).
Start at the Visitor Center, and pay the $15 bucks to see the Cyclorama painting, well worth it. Just remember, you are seeing 360 degrees, so don't get 'tunnel vision,' keep looking round, as the 'charge' takes place. There is an awful lot of detail to see, in this painting.
There is plenty of parking, but the lots are scattered around the site. The visitors center is wonderful, with a small museum as well as a ticket seller for the guided bus tour. The battlefield is huge. I recommend starting as soon as the park opens and packing a lunch if you decide to walk the field. Driving is a good afternoon at least, depending on how many times you park and exit the vehicle. The amount of monuments in this battle field is incredible. I recommend making sure to leave time in your visit to see the cemetery. Do not expect to do this entire park in one day. There is too much to see. I recommend at least a week if you plan to see everything and enjoy the town.
The guides are not only extremely knowledgeable, they are passionate about what they do. Our guide, Jim, made the history alive, personal and moving. His humor was quite enjoyable, as well. I went back a second day just to take it all in with a completely new appreciation for this historic battle.
We went off season, end of September, and it was still warm. Bring lots of water, they do have rest spots. You can see it all in one day, however, you will miss a lot and not a good idea. spend at least two, we did three, and we still didn't get to it all.
What an amazing place. The museum was exceptional. Buy the auto tour and listen as you drive through. It was such a moving experience. What was surprising was the stillness, even with others around. Everyone needs to see Gettysburg. As an American it is important to understand this sacred place.
We started around 0900, and took several breaks to see some of the monuments. I walked 'Pickets Charge,' from the right of Lee (facing the Union), to the Angle, and back, to the right of Lee, facing him. It is about 2 miles, round trip, and well worth it, too see what they faced. NO WAY, would I have done it.
